Admissions

Admission Status

  • Inpatient - Expected LOS is greater than 2 midnights

  • Observation - Expected LOS is less than 2 midnights

  • Bedded Outpatient - Dialysis only, outpatient procedures

Calling Admissions

  • Paging the applicable service for admission is still the preferred method of communication for most services with the exception of the Hospitalist.

  • Please read further below for instructions regarding Hospitalist admissions.

  • For GED admissions, please reference the separate page for GED transfers.

Using Vocera for Hospitalist Admissions

  • ED providers may use a phone-based or webpage-based Vocera text message communication for Hospitalist Admissions.

  • It is highly recommended that you have the Vocera App installed on your phone, because this is essentially the new paging system for the hospital. Please see the Computer & Phone page for more instructions.

If using your phone with the Vocera App, use the following instructions:

If using the webpage method, use the following PDF instructions:

General Medicine (UED)

Admit to Tinsley Harris if:

  • Unattached patients with last two digits of MRN are 50 or greater

  • IM-4 Clinic Patients

  • HIV+ Patients

  • Admissions for these specialties: Rheum, Endocrine or Derm

Admit to Hospitalist (Hosp-60) service if:

  • Unattached patients with last two digits of MRN are less than 50

  • The primary service is capped

  • Patient is being admitted from the Highlands ED (HED)

Use "Hospitalist, Service" as the Attending Physician in ED Admit Request.

They may direct you to admit to the “Cardio-Hospitalist-64” service if you’re admitting a patient to the hospitalist with a cardiac diagnosis like A-Fib, CHF or NSTEMI.

General Medicine (HED)

  • Hospitalist admits all general medical admissions from HED.

  • They have a separate team taking “Hospitalist Admissions for Highlands” when attempting to page or Vocera text them.

GI Medicine

All non-hepatology GI medicine patients are admitted to Hospitalist but still under the service of GI-25. So, when placing the ED Admit Request:

  • Attending Physician = Hospitalist

  • Service = GI-25

Highlands ICU

Like the MICU, the Highlands ICU is now managed by the Pulmonary service. If a patient is boarding while awaiting a Highlands ICU bed, they are co-managed by both the ED and ICU providers. The ICU team will see and staff them in the ED setting.

  • Call 7174 to contact the ICU providers

  • Admit to the “Pulm-24” service

  • All patients need a RAPID COVID PCR test result prior to transfer to the ICU

Recent Procedures

For patients being admitted that have recently had a procedure, please first contact the service that performed the procedure and discuss the admission. They may still suggest admitting to another service, but this at least allows them first pass to admit the patient or consult on the patient as an inpatient.

Pulmonary (Floor, Intermediate)

  • Primarily admits patients established at their pulmonary clinic (CF, ILD).

  • They may also take COPD and chronic vent patients.

  • Admission Contact Information: Rotating Vocera Group ID: (10303). You can send a message via Vocera Web or via UAB Connect. In the event there is a significant delay in call back, feel free to page the Pulmonary/MICU Fellow on-call and they can get the correct person to call you back.

Age Limit Policy

General Rule:

  • Age 18 and older are admitted to UAB.

  • Age 17 and younger are admitted to Children’s Hospital.

Exceptions:

  • Age 16 and older for Trauma

  • Age 12 to 18 for Psych/CPM
