Transfers

Accepting Transfers to the ED

  • ED Physicians do NOT accept transfers from outside hospitals (excluding HED/GED). Those facilities must contact an accepting service first.

  • When a UAB specialty service accepts a patient to the ED from an outside facility, the accepting physician will contact the Pod 4 attending.

  • The communication is intended to inform the Pod 4 attending of the incoming transfer and discuss action items for when the patient arrives.

  • When the Pod 4 attending receives these types of calls, he or she should take down the information using one of two methods.

Method 1. Pre-Arrival Form on FirstNet

The Pod 4 physician takes down the information directly onto a FirstNet Pre-Arrival form. Click the link below for instructions.

Method 2. Paper Form in Pod 4

The Pod 4 physician takes down the information on a yellow paper form which be found on the right side of the Pod 4 physician desk. The physician needs to then hand the form to the Pod 1 nurse.

ED Transfer Request

  • For patients being transferred to an external hospital from UED or HED (Not GED).

  • The order is available on the ED quick orders and LaunchPoint favorites.

  • See document below for more information regarding this process.

  • Please use the guidelines below to help determine candidates for transfer:

Referrals to the ED

UAB clinics and providers occasionally refer patients to the ED for evaluation. In these circumstances, there is a specific order that they should place on the the patient’s chart called “ED Referral”. This order contains the pertinent information about why the patient is being sent. When the patient arrives and is seen in the ED, there will be a special alert on the right side of the patients chart, displaying the pertinent information from the order.

If you take a call from a referring UAB clinic and/or provider who is sending a patient to the ED, please request that they enter the “ED Referral” order. This helps ensure the reason for the ED referral, and any special instructions, are not lost in the process.

Children's Hospital ED

Call the Center for Patient Flow to assist with an emergent transfer to Children’s of Alabama through the One Stop Placement hotline at 205-638-7200 or the nearest available bed in the area.

  • If COA is on diversion status, you may request to discuss patient case with specialty physician.

  • COA One Stop Placement can help provide contact information for other children’s hospitals in the event that COA is on diversion status

  • Once diversion status is clear, COA One Stop Placement will contact referring facilities who were diverted to inquire about existing bed placement needs.

Children age 17* and younger are admitted to Children’s of Alabama

  • *Psychiatry, trauma and NICU patients may be admitted to UAB or COA depending on age and diagnosis.

To use the direct line to speak to a physician unrelated to a potential transfer, you may call 205-638-6868 to speak to an ED physician at Children’s
