GED Admits & Transfers



Patient Transfers

Call the CPF using the direct line (6-0928) and have the following information:

  • Patient Name

  • MRN

  • Diagnosis

  • Patient Choice of Transfer Location (up to 3 choices)

When contacting the CPF, enter the "GED Admit/Transfer Request" order around the same time. This is an important marker for the decision to admit and tracked for regulatory and reporting purposes.

 

Age Requirements

  • 18 and over go to UAB

  • 17 and under go to Children's

  • Exceptions that go to UAB:

    • Trauma patients age 16 and over

    • Pregnant patients

 

Transfer Pathways

  • Major Trauma: Auto-accepted to UAB.

    • ED-to-ED.

  • Code Stroke: Auto-accepted to UAB.

    • May go ED-to-ED, ED-to-IR, or ED-to-inpatient.

  • Code MI: Auto-accepted to UAB.

    • If giving lyrics, ED-to-ED.

    • If going to PCI, patient will go straight to cath lab.

  • Labor: Auto-accepted to MEU.

  • OB under 20 weeks: Goes to UED.

  • OB over 20 weeks: Goes to UED if trauma, AMI, or stroke. Otherwise, MEU.

  • Psych > 18: Adult Psych.

  • Psych 12-18: Adolescent Psych.

  • Psych < 12: Children's.

 

St. Vincent's Admissions

We are preferentially admitting unattached medicine patients (not connected to UAB) to St. Vincent’s. Please offer St. V’s as a first choice to these patients.

  • These transfers still need to go through the usual CPF process.

  • If admitted through this process, UAB will pay for the ambulance.

  • Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with post-op complications on procedures done at UAB

  • Transplant patients

  • Trauma and Burns

  • Atraumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

  • Acute stroke requiring revascularization

  • Acute endocrine emergencies other than DKA (e.g. thyroid storm)

  • Acute rheumatologic crisis

  • Pediatrics 18 and under
