Consults

ED Consult Policy

The expectation for ED consults is that they have evaluated the patient within 1 hour and that disposition and or recommendations have been given within 2 hours.

Electronic Consult Orders

Step 1. When paging a consult, order the "UED Consult to _______" order.

  • These orders start with "UED" and are different than inpatient consults.

  • They are available on the ED Quick Orders page.

Step 2. Right-click and complete the "UED Consult to _______" order when the consulting service has given final recommendations or bed request information.

Vocera & Consult Orders

  • At present, the following ED consult orders generate automated vocera “pages” to the following services: Neurology, Acute Care Surgery, Gen Surg Highlands

Upper Extremity Injuries

Spine Call

Currently, neurosurgery residents are on-call during the first half of the month (1-15) and orthopedic residents are on-call during the second half of the month (16-31). However, please see the guidelines below for additional nuances.

Dialysis Access Clots

The following guidelines are for patients that have an occluded/thrombosed AV graft or fistula who have no other issues and just need the procedure done:

  • If the graft/fistula has NEVER been successfully used (fresh surgery):

    • Call Renal Transplant Surgery for de-clot.

  • If the graft/fistula HAS been successfully used for dialysis:

    • Call Interventional Radiology for de-clot.
