Discharging to Clinic

Certain sickle cell patients have established care at the UAB Sickle Cell clinic which can provide clinic-based IV infusions for uncomplicated sickle cell pain. If these patients present to the ED with sickle cell pain, they can potentially be screened and discharged to the clinic under certain circumstances.

Patients should not be discharged to the clinic if they have:

  • Fever (>101)

  • Altered mental status

  • Hypoxia

For patients that do potentially qualify for discharge to clinic, the process must include the following steps:

  1. Paging Dr. Julie Kanter, discussing the patient’s presentation, and she agrees to accept the patient to clinic that day.

  2. Writing an ED Medical Screen note (if not a full ED Physician Note).

Patient-Specific Care Plans

Sickle cell patients with established care at the sickle cell clinic will often have patient-specific care plans outlined in an area of their chart. Please take the time to locate and read these care plans when you have a sickle cell patient.

To find these care plans, look under the “Care Continuum Notes” in the ED Workflow tab of the ED Summary. See below:
