Sick Call Coverage

This policy was developed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the possibility of multiple physicians becoming sick simultaneously.

This policy is a contingency for rare circumstances when urgent coverage is needed, and no one voluntarily picks up the shift.

Sick call “shifts” are assigned on Qgenda similar to regular shifts.

Basic Details:

  • Two 12-hour calls per day (6a - 5:59p, 6p - 5:59a)

  • Call covers any shifts that start during the assigned timeframe

  • Call does not cover unfilled shifts due to staffing

  • All faculty and fellows participate excluding part-time irregulars

  • Participants cover 12 to 24-hours of sick call per month on average

  • Faculty with less clinical hours will cover more sick call on average

Activation Process:

  • For emergencies only, such as unanticipated illness or family emergency

  • Faculty should contact the applicable medical director as soon as possible

  • If time permits, the medical director will put out a message on Slack

  • The medical director will make the final decision to activate sick call

  • The medical director will be responsible for contacting the person on call

  • Once activated, the sick call person is responsible for that shift
